DanceMapz
A 3D map of electronic music you can explore: artists, labels, genres and cities drawn as connected nodes, built to surface small and emerging acts that algorithms overlook.
Streaming algorithms keep recommending the same big names. The connections that lead to new music, such as who is signed to which label, who plays with whom and where a scene comes from, are hard to see.
My role
Founder. Product, UX and UI design, and the AI-assisted build.
Approach
- A 3D graph you can fly around: artists, labels, genres, cities, countries, festivals and venues, each with its own colour, and every connection labelled, such as signed to, associated with and located in.
- Built for exploring: search, a focus view that keeps the chosen node clear of the crowd, a flat view, and motion you can switch off.
- The relationship engine: underneath DanceMapz is a general-purpose engine for evidenced relationships. Every connection is a claim with a source behind it, and the engine surfaces three kinds of gap: coverage gaps (connections that are missing), evidence gaps (connections with no source) and structural gaps (connections you'd predict but nobody has recorded yet).
- One engine, many maps: DanceMapz is the first use of it, and the same engine drives my skills map.
- Open data only: the map stores only openly licensed (CC0) data such as Wikidata, Discogs and MusicBrainz. Streaming and ticketing services are linked, never copied.
- A member area with journeys, notifications, submissions and reviews.
