Button standardisation
A self-initiated change that moved every button in the People First app from uppercase to sentence case, and saw it through to live.
Uppercase button labels added cognitive load and heavy visual weight across the whole app, and inconsistent button states had built up area by area.
My role
Lead UX designer. I started it, ran it and took it to live. The UX for the update itself was shared with a colleague, Bethany.
Approach
- Customer-led research: support feedback and how people actually read and used the screens showed that uppercase labels slowed people down and made actions harder to tell apart.
- Ran an AI-powered audit, with engineering help, to find every button across the app.
- Kept the user at the centre of every decision: plain, sentence case labels that say exactly what happens next, consistent states, and easier reading for everyone, including people using screen readers or with dyslexia.
- Secured a product manager and an engineering manager to own the delivery.
- Informed every department and presented the change to the CEO before it shipped.
- Built a Button Audit Tracker so anyone in the business could log a button the audit missed, for engineers to fix.
The Button Audit Tracker
Tool · Built with AIThe AI audit found buttons across the whole app, but not every one. I designed and built the tracker myself, with AI, so anyone in the business could log a button it missed, for engineers to fix.
- What it does
- Catalogues each button with its text, page, type, state, app area, department, priority and status, with sortable, grouped views and an archive once a fix is complete.
- Reporting
- A live dashboard shows overall progress and what's outstanding by department and by priority.
- Data
- Saves as JSON, with CSV import and export so the list can move between teams and tools.
- Built by me
- I designed and built it myself, using AI (Claude Code) to write the code, alongside the AI audit that found the buttons in the first place.
- Built with
- A single self-contained HTML file in plain JavaScript, with no frameworks, so it runs anywhere, even offline.

Outcome
The change went live across the whole app: 1,000+ buttons moved to sentence case, with a natural reading pattern and clearer actions.
Research, iteration and delivery
- Researched
- Customer-led: feedback and how people used the screens showed labels in capitals were harder to read and actions harder to tell apart. An AI-powered audit, run with engineering, then found every button across the whole app. It confirmed two problems: uppercase labels added reading effort and visual weight everywhere, and button states had drifted area by area as teams built independently.
- Iterated
- The audit could not catch everything, so I built the Button Audit Tracker for anyone in the business to log the buttons it missed. It went through many versions as people used it, from a simple list to sortable views, grouped reporting and CSV import and export.
- Delivered
- The whole app moved to sentence case: 1,000+ buttons live, with clearer actions and a natural reading pattern. A product manager and an engineering manager owned the delivery, every department was told ahead of time, and the CEO saw it before it shipped.
- In short
- A self-initiated change, led by what helps the user and backed by evidence, turned into a coordinated release across the product. The tracker kept it honest after launch.
